What Causes

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis develops from repetitive strain on the ligament that supports your foot's arch. This strain is often caused by factors like spending long hours on your feet, wearing unsupportive footwear, a sudden increase in physical activity, or being overweight. Tight calf muscles and Achilles tendons can also contribute significantly to developing this painful heel condition.

Symptoms

The most distinct symptom is a sharp, stabbing pain in the bottom of your heel, which is typically worst with your first steps in the morning. This pain often eases with activity but can return after long periods of standing or after sitting down. The ache may feel more intense when you are barefoot or when walking on hard surfaces or stairs.

Treatment

Effective treatment focuses on relieving pain and inflammation. Start with simple self-care like wearing supportive shoes, applying ice, and performing gentle calf and foot stretches. Avoid walking barefoot to minimise stress on the heel. If pain persists, a podiatrist can provide specialised treatments like custom orthotics, foot strapping, and expert advice to ensure a full recovery.
